India Leads as Green Champion with Lowest CO2 Emissions Per Capita in G20

2

India has emerged as a green leader among G20 nations with the lowest per capita CO2 emissions. In 2023, India’s emissions stood at around 2.1 metric tons per person, far below those of many other countries. This positions India as an example of sustainable development in the global community.

India’s per capita emissions are significantly lower than those of nations like Saudi Arabia, where emissions exceed 17 metric tons per person. Despite being the most populous G20 nation, India’s commitment to a lower carbon footprint has been noteworthy.

The country’s low emissions can be attributed to its agrarian economy and relatively modest energy consumption compared to developed countries. India’s efforts to invest in renewable energy and maintain a sustainable development model have been key drivers in this achievement.

While emissions from energy use have increased, India’s growth in clean energy technologies like solar, wind, electric vehicles, and heat pumps has helped keep global emissions in check. These advancements are crucial in reducing the environmental impact of growing energy demands.

Between 2019 and 2023, global energy-related emissions grew by 900 million tons. However, the widespread use of clean energy technologies has prevented emissions from increasing even further, showing the importance of these innovations in limiting future growth.
